Bicycle Cruise Gulf of Corinth & Ionian Islands

Bicycle Cruise Gulf of Corinth & Ionian Islands (8 Days/7 Nights, approx. 160 km )

FROM ATHENS TO CORFU: An unspoiled landscape and centuries of Venetian influence characterize this still fairly unknown group of islands.

This Islandhopping special tour combines the Greek mainland with the impressive islands of the Ionian Sea. Famous sites such as Delphi, or Aegina, or the Asklepieion of Epidauros are highlights of this journey. The passage through the Corinth Canal, an artificial seaway connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean, will surely become an unforgettable memory.

The crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea glittering in all shades of blue, Ithaca, the homeland of Odysseus, and the bird-sanctuary island of Lefkas, the small island of Paxos densely covered in olive groves, as well as the beautiful Old Town of Corfu - all guarantee a wonderfully relaxing vacation.

Highlights of the tour
Culture: Sanctuary of Apollo and the oracle of Delphi
Nature: Picturesque natural harbour of Gaios and Paxos
Activity: Artificial seaway through Canal of Corinth
Culinary: Don't miss the Greek appetizers in the restaurant Bakalogatos in Aegina.
Souvenir: Pistachios on Aegina

1st Day (Sat) Athens/Piraeus (Marina Zeas) - (Embarkation)

Individual arrival at Marina Zeas (Piraeus). Check in on the Panagiota from 2 pm. Dinner on board. Overnight stay in the harbor of Piraeus.

2nd Day (Sun) Piraeus – Aegina Island – Palaia Epidauros (Cycle route aprx. 22 mi./35 km)

In the morning we sail to Aegina, the famous pistachio island. Here our first cycle tour takes us to the excellently preserved temple of Aphaia, which lingers high above and scouts over the lucent sea. Afterwards we return to the boat while cycling though the interior of the island and along Palaiochora and the monastery of Holy Nektarios. Back in Aegina town lunch is served on board and the cruise continues with a cross over to Palaia Epidauros.

3rd Day (Mon) Epidauros – Isthmus of Corinth (Cycle route aprx. 22 mi./35 km)

From Palaia Epidauros today’s cycle tour takes us to the ancient sanctuary of the demi-god Asklepios. Here we visit the best-preserved theatre of Greece, and by dropping a coin we can convince ourselves of the phenomenal acoustics. In the afternoon we sail with the Panagiota through the Isthmus of Corinth, which was completed in 1893. Julius Caesar had already plans for its construction. This 3.9 mi./6.3 km long but only 79 ft./24 m wide and 26 ft./8 m deep canal connects the Aegean Sea with the Gulf of Corinth and saves travellers sailing from Athens to Corinth the aprx. 258 mi./400 km long trip around the whole Peloponnese. If weather conditions are fine, the cruise continues to Galaxidi, otherwise overnight stay in Kiato near Corinth.

4th Day (Tue) Galaxidi - Delphi – Nafpaktos – Ithaca Island

In the morning a transfer picks us up at Galaxidi and takes us to the famous site of Delphi, which rests at the foot of the Parnassus mountain range. Apollo, the god of the light, was once worshipped here and the oracle consulted. Not only the many temples and treasuries, the well-preserved theatre and the stadium, but mainly the breath-taking hillside location of the sanctuary makes the visit to Delphi an unforgettable experience. In the afternoon, the bus takes us to the harbor of Nafpaktos. Our boat takes us on a longer crossing to Vathy on Ithaca Island.

5th Day (Wed) Ithaca Island (Cycle route aprx. 12 or 17 mi./20 or 28 km)

In the morning we cycle on the Ithaca Island. The homeland of the mythical king Odysseus, is a hilly island with a beautiful landscape. On today’s cycle route we can enjoy the typical character of the Ionian Islands away from the beaten tourist track: gnarled olive trees, crystal clear water and friendly islanders – time appears to stand still on Ithaca. Depending on the weather conditions it is planned that the Panagiota takes us to Porto Katsiki after lunch. Porto Katsiki is one of the most famous beaches of Greece, directly below the Leukadian cliff. A longer bathing stop is a must. From there we cruise to Nidri and stay in the little port for the night.

6th Day (Thu) Nidri – Lefkas town – Paxos Island (Cycle routes aprx. 17 mi./27 km)

Today we cycle first through beautiful olive groves to the hidden water falls of Nidri and later on through the mountain world of Lefkas to the island’s capital of the same name. Here the Panagiota awaits us and takes us In the afternoon to Paxos Island. We spend the night in the lovely natural harbor of Gaios.

7th Day (Fri) Paxos Island (Cycle route aprx. 14 mi./23 km)

Paxos, the smallest of the seven Ionian Islands is a grove of olive trees, which gives the island its wonderful silver green colour. On our morning cycle trip we circle the whole island. We can also have a swim in the Mediterranean on one of the many beaches. In the afternoon the Panagiota takes us to Corfu town. Stroll around for a while to enjoy the atmospheric old town. The last evening aboard takes place traditionally and includes the communal dinner and a last get-together in a cozy atmosphere with crew and tour guides.

8th Day (Sat) Corfu Island (Disembarkation)

After breakfast check-out; individual return home or extended stay on the Corfu island.

Panagiota (Comfort)

At 23 x 6 m the Panagiota is an aff ectionately restored wooden motor yacht, which represents the classic boat type of the Kaïkis. With a warm „Welcome on board“, the captain and his crew invite their guests on board. The 10 guest cabins are stylishly furnished and named after Greek islands; all air-conditioned and fitted with shower and WC.

Extended stay

Extend your stay in Athens or on Corfu!

Would you like to be in the vicinity for a few days before your boat- and bike trip or would you like to spend a few days in Greece after your trip? Then we can recommend some accomodations in Athens or on Corfu to you.

The 2004 Olympics brought about a very positive change to the face of the lively 5-million strong metropolis. Large sections of the inner city were transformed into pedestrian areas and a large archaeological park was created, that stretches from the Acropolis across ancient Agora to Kerameikos, the old potters’ and cemetery district. Enjoy an unforgettable stroll through the winding alleys of the Plaka, the charming Old Town district, where you should not only stop to admire the many different souvenirs available, but should also make yourself comfortable in one of the countless cafés.

The accommodation facilities we recommend are situated in the centre of Athens, allowing you to reach most of the tourist sights by foot.

Corfu is the largest island in the Ionian archipel and its diverse landscape, countless beaches, turquiose-coloured sea and many sightseeing attractions are impressive. The beautiful landscape in the north of the island, with its coast of sandstone cliffs at Sidari, attracts tourists like a magnet.

Corfu’s capital – also named Corfu – is considered one of the most beautiful towns in all of Greece. To stroll through the lively lanes of the historical centre with its Venetian flair, where countless small shops offer a colourful profusion of wares, is a true holiday highpoint. Also impressive are the New and Old Fortress, just as photogenic as the monastery island of Vlacherna- connected by a dam to the main island – and nearby Mouse Island (Pontikonissi).

Austria’s great empress Sissi already described Corfu as the island of her dreams when she came there to improve her delicate health. In 1890 – 1892, she had an extraordinary palace built 7 km south of Corfu Town, calling it Achilleion, after Achilles, the legendary Homeric hero. It is today one of the main tourist attractions.

So it is certainly always worthwhile to extend your holiday on Corfu: No matter whether you are interested in culture, love hiking or exploring the island by car, or simply want to relax on the beach – Corfu has something for everybody.
